Itinerary

Day 01

Batik Factory Visit and Workshop

Pickup from your hotel in Weligama, Mirissa, or Matara. Drive to the renowned batik factory (approximately 15-30 minutes depending on location). Upon arrival, receive a warm welcome and introduction to Sri Lankan batik tradition. Begin with a guided factory tour where you'll observe the complete batik-making process: Design Phase: Watch artists sketch intricate patterns and motifs onto white cotton fabric—traditional designs include elephants, peacocks, floral patterns, geometric shapes, and cultural symbols. Wax Application: Observe the crucial wax-resist technique where hot wax is applied to fabric areas that should remain uncolored. Artisans use tjanting tools (small copper vessels with spouts) for detailed work and stamps for repetitive patterns. Dyeing Process: See how fabrics are immersed in dye baths, with colors building up through multiple wax-and-dye cycles. Learn how artisans achieve vibrant colors and complex multi-layered designs. Wax Removal: Watch the final step where wax is removed through boiling water, revealing the finished batik design with its characteristic crackle effect. Throughout the tour, artisans explain the history of batik in Sri Lanka, the difference between Sri Lankan batik and Indonesian or Malaysian styles, how the craft supports local communities, and the export market for Ceylon batik. After the demonstration, participate in your own hands-on batik-making session. Under the guidance of experienced craftsmen, you'll: Choose your fabric size and design template (or create your own simple design), apply wax to your fabric using traditional tools, select colors for dyeing, complete the dyeing process with assistance, and create your own unique batik piece. While your batik is being processed and dried (if time allows, or it will be packaged for you to complete drying at your hotel), explore the factory showroom featuring finished batik products including wall hangings, clothing, sarongs, tablecloths, and decorative items. Learn about pricing, quality differences, and have the opportunity to purchase additional batik products if desired (no pressure). Refreshments (tea and snacks) are typically provided. Collect your handmade batik cloth—a personal keepsake and meaningful souvenir of your creative experience in Sri Lanka. Return transfer to your hotel with wonderful memories and your unique creation.
