Itinerary

Day 01

Madu River Wetland Safari

Pickup from your hotel in Bentota, Weligama, or Mirissa. Drive to Madu River, one of Sri Lanka's most biodiverse wetland ecosystems and a proposed Ramsar Wetland of International Importance (approximately 30 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on your location). Arrive at the boat launching point and board your private boat with an experienced local guide who knows the river intimately. Begin your peaceful journey through the Madu River complex, which consists of the main river and 64 small islands covered in mangrove forests. Glide through narrow mangrove tunnels where the dense root systems create natural archways—a photographer's paradise with dappled light filtering through the canopy. Your guide explains the critical role mangroves play in coastal protection, biodiversity, and supporting fish populations. Observe diverse water birds in their natural habitat: various species of herons, kingfishers, cormorants, egrets, and seasonal migratory birds. Watch for water monitors (large lizards) sunbathing on branches or swimming across the water. Stop at one of the small river islands where local families engage in traditional cinnamon cultivation. Walk through the cinnamon plantation and witness a demonstration of traditional cinnamon peeling—skilled workers show how bark is removed, processed, and rolled into the cinnamon quills we know. Learn about this valuable spice that has been traded from Sri Lanka for centuries. Your guide explains how these sustainable livelihoods coexist with environmental conservation. Continue to a fish therapy stop where you can dip your feet into the water and experience natural 'doctor fish' gently nibbling dead skin—a fun and relaxing experience loved by children and adults alike (optional). If time permits and based on your interest, visit a small river-side Buddhist temple on one of the islands, offering peaceful atmosphere and cultural insight. Throughout the boat ride, enjoy the tranquil pace, fresh air, and the rhythmic sounds of water and bird calls. The river safari is unhurried, allowing ample time for photography, questions, and simply absorbing the natural beauty. The total boat experience lasts approximately 1.5-2 hours. Return to the landing point and transfer back to your hotel with memories of Sri Lanka's precious wetland ecosystems and traditional rural life.
